AN INTERVIEW WITH Charles W. Bush PRODUCER


As a producer, please introduce yourself.

My name is Charles W. Bush! I graduated with a Communications Radio/TV production degree and minor in Theatre in 2005

from Arkansas State University. In 2007/2008 I started working with Brenda Taylor at Taylor'd Production in Dallas, TX as PA and

Cam Op on different projects. In 2010 I, founded Appointed Productions and began my professional work with the DFW area and abroad.

In 2013, I became the Communications and Media Specialist for DVA Productions, a nonprofit theater company based in Fort Worth, TX.

To my credit there are many more events, television shows, commercials, music videos and films for which I have written,

produced, directed and/or provided marketing support.


Give us some more information about yourself and the films you have made so far, about your experience?

Although being an independent filmmaker is challenging, the journey is fun and can be rewarding.

The joy of contacting angel investors and even strangers to invest in your project is priceless.

The independent film industry in Dallas/Fort Worth, TX is very small. In my earlier years, getting supporters was challenging at times

because you had people that have a certain loyalty of support to a group of people or person. I am thankful to have started

under Taylor'd Productions and working with DVA Productions (a non profit theatre company in Fort Worth) to give me

the strength/confidence I needed to press on. I've produced, shot and edited a variety of films.

The genre's range from: Drama, Romantic Comedy, Suspense, and documentary. My favorite to tackle is romantic comedies.

I like for my films to have a message involved. I'm almost out of the woods where I can start saying no to films that need more work

on the script etc. If you're an independent filmmaker we all know when work calls, the majority of the time you have to answer with a yes.

Let us know why you became a producer of your film "Empty Nest' what was a specific in the screenplay and your team that you have chosen them to help?

I was asked by the Director to produce this film and immediately I said "Yes!" Well, in my head I said yes.

I love working with director Sheran Goodspeed Keyton because her work ethic is impeccable. When she said she had the perfect script

but it wasn't any scripted dialogue....I said huh? She explained it to me and I was up for the challenge. After spending time with the script,

she sat down with the cast and the dialogue was birthed from chemistry. I was floored to see this happen on set.

When I was presented with this concept, I knew I would need to get a dp/cinematographer that can capture the essence of lighting and more

so I went with Tim Walker Jr as DP and Michael Bradley as a Cam Op. These two were phenomenal to work with!


What are the films or people that had impacts on you and deeply inspired you to become a film producer?

I had the privilege of watching Brenda Taylor of Taylor'd Productions put the pieces of a production together and I was immediately intrigued.

She chose the editor, camera ops (if she wasn't shooting), locations, and more. She worked very close with clients to get them what they needed and they were satisfied. Watching her work, I knew customer service was something I definitely wanted to be apart of my productions.

You have produced a short drama film. Is it your first favorite genres or do you like different genre?

Romantic comedies are my favorite genre. My second favorite is drama.


Your film “Empty Nest“ was officially selected in the

"American Golden Picture International Film Festival".

What were some of the challenges you faced in producing this film?

I'll take budget for 300 Alex! In all seriousness, budget is very challenging with indie films. Finding the right pieces to the production puzzle is an uphill climb. Finding the right music composer was very challenging also. The director had a major hand in that one. Having Joe W. Rogers as the music composer with close to 50 years of experience was amaze balls!


Let us know more about your experience in this film?

This is the first film where I actually had an opportunity to eat the food on set. It was cooked/prepared on the spot. The cast raved about the craft services throughout the process! The casting for this film was pretty intense too. We went through several selections before we narrowed it down. We wanted the family to look as much alike as possible.

Why did you decide to make the film “Empty Nest“?

It is a very important story to tell. Many women experience this throughout the world. One of the more important questions is,

how do you deal with experiencing empty nest?


For you, what was the biggest lesson you had to learn after producing this film?

When filming at a Lake House or near a large body of water, take in consideration the wind and humidity for film equipment and still photography.


What keeps you inspired to continue producing films?

Knowing that I have the ability to create a narrative that I can control. When people tell me they loved my film, they cried,

or it helped them in whatever situation they were in ...... it lets me know I'm walking in my purpose.


What are your goals in film industry?

My long term goal is to be able to write a script or bring a script/idea to direct contacts in Hollywood and it get distribution.

My short term goal is to be able to depend solely on creative arts as a main source of income.


What is your next project?

I have two projects that are coming down the pipeline. I have to meet with Exec Producers again and hopefully we can lock in the contract.

I have some projects running the festival market also. Janet Forney out of Cedar Hill, TX wrote a great feature romance that I had the luxury of producing and directing. I also have a short film in post production right now that will be out soon called "The Monster In My Closet"

with Malcolm X. Johnson and New Harlem Renaissance Productions along with my production company Appointed Productions.
